Linux Links

Posted on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 in computer, linux, open source

I found these three excellent links that may be of interest to you, especially if you are new to Linux and would like to learn more about it.

This provides you with a set of questions to determine which Linux distro is the best for you.  Now, you may agree or disagree with its recommendation, but if you don’t know which Linux distro is right for you and need some advice on which one you should try first, then you may want to give this test a try and see what you get.  Of course, it doesn’t have an exhaustive list of distributions available like the one in DistroWatch.com, only the major ones are available in the test result (which is good enough for me).

Most of the times, developers of Windows programs do not support Linux platform (exceptions to Mozilla who has the idea to make the programs available anywhere).  To tackle this problem, the link above contains the alternative Linux programs to some of the popular Windows programs.  This is a living document; therefore, if you find a program that you think needs to be listed there, you can add it so.  To me, the list seems quite exhaustive already.

This is a new article I found today from Linux Today.  Basically it lists down some caveats on migrating to Linux for Small Office use.  These are very standard tips, so I’m sure the list can grow further than 5 tips than the article suggested.  I can think of some things like how to synchronize your mobile phones using Linux desktops, and supporting non-standard accounting software such as those local software that only have clients on Windows platform.

Hope the links are helpful! 8-)
